Smile Rescuers
10th annual Smile Rescuers event is another success
PCHS celebrates a decade of providing oral health
education
The
10th Annual S mile Rescuers oral health
event was May 17 as part of
Bremerton's annual Armed Forces Festival. The event provided useful oral health
information in a fun manner for kids of all ages. After gale force winds
and sporadic rain showers threatened to shut down last year's event,
Mother Nature gave everyone a sigh of relief as the weather was
fantastic for this year.
The sun
blazed heavily upon the event during one of the hottest days of the year
thus far. Children and teens had the opportunity to take their
"passport" through six education stations covering topics ranging from
the development of a baby's first teeth to the effects of spit tobacco,
and the importance of proper brushing and flossing. Each station had
either a hands-on model - like a Typodent model or flossing
demo - or task to be completed in order to help reinforce the messages
of the day. Kids also received a giveaway at each station.
After
completing the event and filling out their passports, the kids were able
to jump for several minutes inside of the inflatable funhouses in
Kathy's Smile Place. Total participation in the 10 Annual Smile Rescuers
totaled 317 people, including more than 170 children
and teens.
A group
from Leadership Kitsap helped promote the event while partnering with
PCHS on the "Smile Kitsap" project. The project worked to donate an oral
health educational kit, called Treasure Your Teeth boxes - to
each of the elementary schools within the Bremerton School District.
Teachers can use the kits - which include an instructional video, tooth
growth charts, brushing models, etc... - to help children learn the
basics of oral health, without the need of a dental professional
directly on hand.
Since 1999, Peninsula Community Health Services and community volunteers
have reached nearly 2,000 kids through the annual Smile Rescuers oral
health fair. PCHS Dental would like to thank its partners for helping to
make the event a success. The groups combined to provide more than 80 volunteers for the
10th annual event:
Americorps; Leadership Kitsap; KCR-Headstart; The
Kitsap Sun;
Navy Dental NW;
Naumman Orthodontics
