Smile Rescuers History
Smile Rescuers is an oral health fair
sponsored by PCHS. Held annually in conjunction with the Bremerton
Chamber's Armed Forces Day Festival, the fair uses interactive learning
stations to help teach kids about proper oral health habits. PCHS
partners with various local agencies to bring this family-oriented event
to life, which makes learning more fun for the children.
After kids register for the fair, they
continue down the line through six education stations covering topics
ranging from the development of a baby's first teeth to the effects of
spit tobacco, and the importance of proper brushing and flossing. Each
station has either a hands-on model - like a Typodent model or flossing
demo - or task to be completed in order to help reinforce the messages
of the day. Kids also receive a giveaway at each station.
Kids also have the opportunity to jump in
one of the inflatable funhouses after they complete the event and have
their passport stamped at each of the stations. The special area is
called Kathy's Smile Place in honor of a founding Smile Rescuers
planning committee person who passed away in 2006. Her contributions to
the event made her an invaluable member of the planning committee. Parents and teens each
have their own stations they can visit for more oral health information
as well.
Since 1999, Peninsula Community Health
Services and community volunteers have reached nearly 2,000 kids through
the annual Smile Rescuers oral
health fair.

Volunteers
We are always looking for volunteers to
help out with this event. We need volunteers to help plan the event -
usually beginning in November - and volunteers to help man the stations
during the event, which is the third Saturday in May each year. While
having a background in oral health is a plus, it is not a necessity in
order to volunteer. If you are
interested in volunteering for Smile Rescuers, please contact our
Development Department at 360.478.2366 or via email.
