Back to School
Health Fairs in August
PCHS will be once
again hosting our annual "Back to School Fairs". They will launch August
2 and occur every Tuesday throughout the month in all three clinics and
on Saturdays ( August 7 and 21) for extended hours clinic in Bremerton.
Last year the Fairs were a huge success
with 98 patients seen during the 3 days. In 2010 we plan to make the
events bigger and better. We have selected one provider at each site to
see only Well Child visits and perform sports/school physicals,
including immunizations and Head Start screenings. During
the BTS Fair, we will have representatives from The College Success
Foundation signing up 7th
and 8th
graders for the College Bound Scholarship Program.
Community
Health Plan has donated Seattle Sounders Cinch Bags and Safeway gift
cards for raffle drawings. There are lots of give-aways like backpacks,
pencil pouches, and car seats. It is a great time for kids and staff
alike.
Are you Tough Enough to Wear Pink?
Have you been
wondering what that question is all about? Wondering what is this PINK
thing? I can tell you it is not,
Alecia Beth Moore, better
known by her stage name
P!nk
It is all about raising money and
awareness for breast cancer.
On August 28th the PRCA Rodeo performance at the Kitsap
County Fair & Stampede will come alive and show their support by wearing
pink. This year the Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP) committee has
chosen PCHS to be the beneficiary of their fundraising event. The event
will be at the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede Thunderbird Rodeo Arena at
7pm.
When I asked Linda Foutch, TETWP Event Coordinator and breast cancer
survivor, ‘how did you choose PCHS to be your benefit recipient this
year?’ She responded “we chose PCHS this year because we felt there are
so many folks who are not insured and for the low income population in
Kitsap County who fell into the cracks with Breast Cancer and could not
afford treatment, mammograms and testing.”
There are many activities going on before and during the rodeo event to
spread awareness and raise money. One is the BOOT Campaign, where
businesses around Kitsap County will have pink boots available for any
donation over $1, the business can post the boots in their business or
collect them to be part of the support wall on display at the
fairgrounds during the fair & rodeo. This is similar to the babies’ feet
for March of Dimes. Another is the raffle ticket sales, $1 will get you
a ticket that will go in the drawing for many wonderful prizes. The list
of prizes keeps growing, items range from several handmade quilts, gift
baskets, restaurant gift certificates, meat packages & rodeo items. If
you are interested in purchasing raffle tickets, donating a raffle prize
or know of a business that would like to get involved, please contact
TETWP Event Coordinator
Linda Foutch at (360) 479-4577.
Merchandise will be sold nightly at the TETWP booth. Come on out and
show your support by being TOUGH ENOUGH and wearing PINK on Saturday
August 28th , plan on stopping by the booth at the Kitsap
County Fair & Stampede August 25th – 29th.
How did TETWP get started?
Tough Enough to Wear
Pink was created by entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor Terry
Wheatley to bring the sport of professional rodeo and the western
community together to rally against breast cancer. Since its inception
in 2004, TETWP has empowered rodeos and western events in the U.S. and
Canada to focus attention on the need for a cure. To date, the campaign
has raised $5 million dollars for breast cancer charities, much of which
stays right in the community. The grassroots movement has inspired
other sports communities to mount their own TETWP campaigns, spreading a
message of hope and support that reaches beyond the rodeo arena to
competitors, families and fans across America.* *http://www.toughenoughtowearpink.com

Back to School
Health Fairs a Wonderful Success
98
children
receive needed health care services
The 4th
annual PCHS Back to School Health Fair helped prepare area students for
the return of the school year by providing one-stop shopping for
well-child checkups, immunizations, sports physicals and dental exams.
This year's event - held August 13 to 15 -
gave 98 current PCHS patients the
opportunity to meet the health requirements set forth by area schools.
PCHS staff gave
away Seattle Sounders FC/Community Health Plan cinch sacks, pencil
pouches, balloons and other various prizes for all children and youth
who participated.
If you missed the
event and your student needs a physical and/or immunizations before
school starts, be sure to call your medical or dental clinic to make an
appointment today.

Poulsbo Clinic Now Open
Upgraded facility allows for higher patient loads
Update: May 15 - PCHS will host an official
open house for the new clinic on Wed.,
June 10 from 2-4 p.m. Please join us for a short ceremony followed by
tours of the facility...
The wait is over as PCHS has completed a relocation of the Poulsbo clinic
began taking patients at its new location on
Friday, May 1, 2009. The new office suite is in the Creekside Office
Building, located at 19917 7th Ave. NE, Suite 205, just off of Highway
305. The move was made in an effort to provide a continued
excellence in quality of care to PCHS patients in the North Kitsap area.
The new clinic replaces the
existing location and features 11 exam rooms housed within a 9,180
square-foot suite. The new upgraded facility will more closely resemble
its Bremerton and Port Orchard counterparts and will allow for expanded
patient capacity.
The Poulsbo clinic now employs five
providers - two doctors and three midlevel practitioners. Plans to move
the clinic had been in the works for
several years and damage sustained in the December storm of 2007 greatly
intensified that need. Please check back with us frequently for updates
on our open house event, tentatively scheduled for mid June.

Snowfall prompts early closures
Extended Hours clinic closed
Continuing snowfall has prompted PCHS to
close early all clinical and administrative sites. Sites will close at
3:30 pm today and the Extended Hours clinic will not be operational. The
closures were made to assure both patient and staff safety. For more
information review our Winter Advisory
page.
December 23 - updated December 29
Winter storm forces immediate clinic shutdown
Heavy snow fall prompts closure for several days
As was the case with many Kitsap County
businesses, PCHS was forced to close all clinics for much of the last
two weeks due to the tremendous amount of snow fall. With
accumulation totaling near two feet in some parts of the county -
since December 17 - it was necessary for both patient and employee
safety that PCHS clinics not be open during the storms.
Limited staff arrived to the clinics on a
blustering morning Thursday, December 18 and began seeing as many patients as
possible. By midday it was apparent that the weather was only getting
worse, which prompted chief executive officer Barbara Malich to announce
clinics were to close beginning at 2 p.m. The clinics remained closed
through December 22 and opened the morning of the 23rd on a delayed schedule.
Another severe snow storm caused a closure on December 24.
PCHS was pleased to be back to business as
usual as of December 26, providing the excellent, quality care for which
we've become known.
For more information on future clinic
conditions including delays, closings and accessibility, please visit
our Winter Advisory page.

Sports car club raises money for Patient Care
Fund
Local group hits the gas to raise the cash
The Bremerton Sports Car Club
presented PCHS with a donation of $5,195 on October 12 to benefit the Edwin G. Tegenfeldt Patient Care Fund.
The Club raised the funds through a community outreach effort at their
Labor Day race (September 1).
PCHS chief fiscal and operations officer, Nancy Schnoor, was on hand to
accept the check on behalf of the organization.
PCHS would like to thank members of the
Bremerton Sports Car Club for their generosity. Their efforts will help
some of PCHS' most vulnerable patients pay for ancillary fees such as
x-rays and medications. PCHS would also like thank Barbra Sykes - a
member of our Development Council - for organizing the fundraiser and
connecting us with a new friend in the community.

Bainbridge Island One Call for All
Red envelope fundraiser benefits PCHS
The Bainbridge Island One Call for All red
envelope fund raising drive begins on October 1. The fundraiser, held
annually for nearly 50 years, helps level the playing field for
participating nonprofit organizations during the fundraising season.
PCHS is a proud partner agency and beneficiary of the drive.
Bainbridge residents will receive their
red envelopes in the next few weeks. We hope at that time you will
consider designating a portion of your generous contributions to PCHS -
we receive 100 percent of designated dollars - to help us continue
providing quality health care services for Kitsap families.
